Saturday StudiesAs promised, more updates. These are from my Saturday drawing group. I'm currently searching for a publisher for a picture book that I've created.

Time to get backI've not been posting here lately but that in no way means I've not been busy. Over the next few days, as I have some extra time, I'll be uploading what I have been up to lately. For today, however, I think I'll post my most recent work; a few experiments I made last week using chalk. I figured the medium would help me loosen up as I have a tendency to be over-controlling when working.
Anyway, the images are as follows:
2 minute warmup
10 minute drawing
10 minute drawing
20 minute drawing
Enjoy!

Tattoo ElementBetween projects, I've been slowly designing a tattoo for a friend. This deer is one of the possible elements I've created for that project. I've had a bit of a delay in updates due to the fact that I've been sick for about 3 weeks now. I'm getting better now, however, so expect some more updates very soon.

Saturday SketchesHere are two more images from Saturday's figure drawing session. The first one is a warm up sketch and the second is a 20 minute, I believe. I had a bit of a slow start Saturday...it happens.

Racoons on Boars! RUN!I'm working on a tattoo for a friend of mine. He keeps adding animals that he wants included to the tattoo. Now, there are several that need to be present so I've had to get creative about how I'm going to cram all of these woodland critters onto one tattoo...the natural solution to me was to have them jockeying on top of each other.

Another Figure StudyI had a chance to stop in for the figure study group this weekend. This is the 20 minute sketch that I produced while there. It was extremely cold in the building that day and I think that shows up a bit in the line quality of the drawing. I felt like I was moving in slow motion. I still can't get a decent scan of last weeks. I'll try my camera and see if that will give me a better result. Now, back to painting.

Doodles!I have 2 other images from Saturday's drawing session to scan in but I'm still fighting a crappy, outdated scanner, so there might be a bit of a delay. In the meantime, check out this 5 minute pose while I get the other images up. I finished the figure way early...so I sketched me an octopus attack while waiting for the next pose. I then brought it into photoshop and quickly blocked in some colors. The longer sketches will be coming soon.

Figure StudiesI finally have the time to attend Saturday drawing study groups regularly. In the past, Saturdays were always either busy or filled with work but luckily, my schedule has changed with the new job. Anyway, here is one of the drawings I made today. I'm a bit rusty, but its coming back. I feel I didn't capture accurately the model's beautiful big eyes and I kept getting caught up in the fun of drawing the strands of hair. Oh, I also still haven't found a good way to scan in drawings with colored pencil marks. The colors seem to wash out or do strange things when color corrected..I'll do some research and see what I can come up with.

Lessons learnedSo, I've been going through an intense job interview process these past few weeks in a variety of fields. I have finally found some work but it was quite a struggle. I'm not sure if you guys know this but having an art degree is about as useful as having a third nipple when looking for work. I've interviewed at all levels of employment and it has taught me some important lessons about the process. Here are just a few that I wish I had known beforehand:
Lesson 1: Make yourself irresistible. It was unfortunate that by some fluke, the first job interview I recieved when I started looking was for an art position with Google. Why, might you ask was an interview with Google a bad thing? It was so because of WHEN it happened. I had not learned the rules about how to make myself sound irresistible. For example, when asked the question "Why do you think we need you here at google?" I jokingly said "Because of my great sense of humor" and the response was "I'm not smiling". When asked this question, I could have responded with how well-read I am and how my mastery of so many different artistic and cinematic mediums gives me a unique perspective on the creation of art. I could have mentioned how the skills I learned as a comic book artist has a direct relationship to my ability to make icons since the same rules for simplifying a figure for a comic apply to simplifying a logo or icon. The point is that you are wasting the interviewer's time if you are not telling them the best qualities you have to offer in the most succinct way possible.
Lesson 2: Know what you are worth. At another interview, I was caught off-guard when asked what my rate was. I was under the impression that the job was salaried instead of commission so when asked this, I severely undervalued myself. I think this in turn led to me not getting the job as it sounded like I didn't know what I was doing. My failure at this particular interview also had plenty to do with this next lesson...
Lesson 3: Don't sound desperate. Me underselling myself managed to do just that. You are selling a product to them. Making yourself sound desperate devalues the product.
So, those are just some of the tough lessons I've learned. I'm sure there are more I could share but it is 2 in the morning and I've got work tomorrow so I will leave you with a new image...I blame the stress of looking for new work with their content.

After looking at some of
Nate Simpson's blog and reading how he works, I decided to take the information he so graciously shared and apply it to an image of my own. I have mixed feelings about my first attempt at digital inking but I think that I'm on to something here. I'm gearing up for an epic comic book project and trying to level up my drawing skill. It would really help if I could find that magic ink pen of artistry +5.

Short comic complete!I've just completed a short comic book which was a project LONG overdue for me to be finished with. This is the first page. The comic will be printed alongside other artist's stories in a comic book collection. I apologize for the lack of updates. I've been experiencing some technical difficulties(aka I went brain stupidz...long story).

Coming Soon!I've been working on several new paintings lately as well as two more skateboard deck designs. Below are two rough sketches for the boards. I've also recently completed a design job for a t-shirt. When the shirt becomes available for sale, I'll post a link from this site.
